Department of 数学

We are saddened by the loss of 数学 Professor Emeritus 韦恩主教, who left us peacefully on April 30, 2024. He will be profoundly missed.  Wayne dedicated an exceptional 50 years to teaching at 加州大学洛杉矶分校. He joined the 数学 Department in 1972.  He was the co-author of a widely used Linear Algebra textbook.  Throughout his career, he was a tireless advocate for high-quality mathematics education at the K-12 level, 事实上, he served several times on California's review panel for statewide textbook adoption.  A celebration of Wayne's remarkable life will be organized in the coming months.

There are plenty of programs, often in the summer, to guide students through the process of doing original research in math.  Career panels and other events of interest also take place from time to time.  In addition, several programs provide mentoring or other support for advanced studies in mathematics.  看到我们的 Student Opportunities page to learn more.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. P. K. 萨勃拉曼尼亚, a distinguished mathematician and educator. He peacefully departed on August 30, 2023, in South Pasadena, California, at the age of 85. Read more at the College of 自然科学s' Memorial.

加州大学洛杉矶分校 students and alumni have opportunities to take part in research projects guided by faculty.  The picture above shows Tim Harris, 玛丽亚·施密特, and Kathy Ortiz presenting their findings at a Mathematical Association of America conference.

The Math Department's Career Path feature event this year was a talk by Dr. Ramon Durazo-Arvizu, director and research faculty at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the USC Keck School of Medicine.  The presentation was entitled "Selected Applications of Statistical Methods to Biological Research Studies: From a 数学 Student to an Applied Biostatistician."
